Directed by Francesco Rosi, whose films have long explored Italy's complex sociopolitical milieu, THREE BROTHERS delivers a symbolic state-of-the-society message. Three brothers, each representing a significant segment of the Italian body politic, return to the village of their youth to attend their mother's funeral. Raffaele (Philippe Noiret) is a Roman judge presiding over the trial of a terrorist whose life is consequently in constant danger; Rocco (Vittorio Mezzogiorno) is a self-sacrificing teacher; and Nicola (Michele Placido) is a factory worker and organizer. None of the brothers is as happy or at peace with the world as is their father (Charles Vanel), who has lived his life simply and close to the land. Though the talk periodically becomes a little ponderous, Rosi's mise-en-scene speaks volumes about the fragmented lives of his characters and an Italy on the brink of social disintegration. leave a comment
