BROTHERS GRIMM, THE

Swarms of flies, a pair of decapitated heads, entombed children and one very nasty gingerbread man — writer-director-fantasist Terry Gilliam's take on the Brothers Grimm isn't exactly kid-friendly, but then, neither are the gore-and-doom-laden versions of classic folk stories that made "Grimm" synonymous with "Fairy Tales." Gilliam simply uses the tropes of the stories themselves to construct a darkly whimsical -- and oddly underrated -- spin on Ghostbusters. Read the complete review for The Brothers Grimm

Heath Ledger: A Career Cut Short

Not long before 3:35 pm on January 22, 2008, the short life and promising career of actor Heath Ledger came to a sudden, tragic end. It was around this time that Ledger's housekeeper and his masseuse discovered the body of the Australian-born actor in the bedroom of the Broome Street apartment he'd been renting in lower Manhattan. Ledger was not yet 29 years old.News of Ledger's death came as a terrible shock to nearly everyone, even though it now seems the low-key, Oscar-nominated actor had been privately battling his own demons for quite some time. His passing is the terrible surprise ending no one saw coming, an abrupt finale to a life and career that seemed to be all about the unexpected.Born and raised in Perth, Australia, and named after the darkly romantic anti-hero from Wuthering Heights (he has a sister named Katherine), Ledger left school at the age of 17 to pursue a career in acting. He eventually landed a role in Blackrock, a small independent feature about teen rape, fo... read more

THIS VIRGIN'S GOT LEGS

The 40 Year Old Virgin saw enough action over the weekend to retain the No. 1 spot at the box office, screwing The Brothers Grimm in the process. Retaining nearly 80 percent of its opening-weekend audience, Virgin scored another $16.4 million to bring its 10-day total to $48.7 million. Grimm, meanwhile, debuted in second with a relatively weak $15.1 million. I say "relatively" because the weekend's other newcomers would have killed for half that coin. Underground spooker The Cave got buried alive at No. 6 with $6.2 million, while Undiscovered remained just that at No. 18 with $690,000. read more
