After an argument York leaves her husband, Craig, and goes to her family's estate to stay with her brother, O'Toole. Though the house and surrounding lands have been uncared for, York settles in, but must soon deal with her brother's amorous advances. Craig comes after his wife, and an unusual triangle develops. It is learned that O'Toole has handled the family estate with disastrous financial results, and his possession of the land is in jeopardy. Along with his incestuous yearning for York, O'Toole's longing for the old, stable ways on the estate cause him to become unbalanced. Sadly, the reunited Craig and York have him committed to an institution. This depressing film, with some oddly placed humor, fails to investigate the emotionally charged situation or the reasons behind the protagonist's illness. The wordy script shoots off into a variety of directions, none of which add to or give another view of the essential conflict. O'Toole and York are good, but not exceptional, unable to overcome the limitations of the screenplay. The film's saving grace is its cinematography, which captures the somber mood of the hauntingly beautiful countryside of Scotland and Ireland. leave a comment
