Robert Taylor and Eleanor Powell return in this "Broadway Melody" film, in which producer Steve Raleigh (Robert Taylor), in desperate need of funds for his new musical, is rescued after the racehorse owned by the show's star, Sally Lee (Powell), wins at Saratoga. The slim plot barely accommodates the film's overabundance of song-and-dance numbers. Taylor (looking rather bored with being in another musical), and Powell, attempting to inject some life into well-worn dance routines, are overshadowed by the mesmerizing young Judy Garland, who hauntingly sings her classic paean to Clark Gable--a specially adapted "You Made Me Love You" titled "Dear Mr. Gable"--dances with Buddy Ebsen, and plays Sophie Tucker's daughter. Other songs include "I'm Feeling Like a Million," "Yours and Mine," "Everybody Sing," "Follow in My Footsteps," "Your Broadway and My Broadway," "Broadway Rhythm," "Sun Showers" (Nacio Herb Brown, Arthur Freed), "Some of These Days" (Shelton Brooks). leave a comment
