Powell stars as a singing cab driver hell-bent on becoming a radio crooner but meeting with little success. Blondell, secretary to a radio station executive, tells Powell about a client's search for a singing gondolier for an upcoming ad campaign. When Blondell and the head of the cheese company embarking on the new promotion, Fazenda, travel to Venice looking for a real gondoliere, they find Powell poling and warbling. They bring him back to fill the bill, but one night he reveals his deception to the radio audience. Silly but entertaining minor musical that allowed Powell to stretch his vocal chords during some engaging numbers. Blondell works well as the love interest, and Fazenda is a weird treasure. Songs include "Lulu's Back in Town," "The Rose in Her Hair," "Lonely Gondolier," "You Can Be Kissed" (Al Dubin, Harry Warren). leave a comment
