After making several more ambitous films, writer-director Allen returned to terra firma with BROADWAY DANNY ROSE, a charming comedy shot in black and white that mixes several varieties of the New Yorkers that Allen loves so well. The film begins with a group of Broadway types sitting at the Carnegie Delicatessen reminiscing about the career of Danny Rose (Allen), a two-bit agent who specializes in offbeat acts that no other agent will handle. His one regular client is Lou Canova (Forte), a lounge singer who drinks too much, weighs too much, and uses Rose to cover for him when he's off cheating on his wife with girlfriend Tina (an unusually animated performance by Farrow). When Canova gets a chance to perform at a better place than the dives where he's been working, Rose has to pretend to be Tina's boyfriend, a move which gets him into a lot of trouble. Tina is supposedly engaged to a gangland figure, and the other mobsters, thinking that their pal has been cuckolded, begin chasing poor Danny all around the city. Although the film contains many of the great verbal jokes that are Allen's forte, the visual wit and the sentimental drama fall a bit short. leave a comment
