This unassuming modern-day version of the Hans Brinker saga is strictly for the pre-teen set. Along with his non-conformist pals, Andy "Brink" Brinker (Eric Von Detten) performs in-line skating stunts just for the fun of it. Dubbing themselves the "Soul Skaters," Brink's buddies refuse to subscribe to the mercenary motives of classmates Val (Sam Horrigan) and Boomer (Walter Jones). Brink's friend Peter (Patric Levis) and the other Soul Skaters make a pact never to join Val's Xbladz team, but then Brink's dad suffers financial reversals and one of Val's skaters is injured. The Xbladz talent scout offers Brink a paying position with the potential for lucrative endorsement deals, and the earnest teen is caught on the horns of a dilemma. He takes the part-time gig and doesn't tell his friends or his dad, whose pride would be hurt. But keeping the secret means Brink also has to accept the dog-grooming position his father lands for him. The exhausted Brink's double life eventually catches up with him. Brink's pals spot him in Xbladz colors and, unaware of his family's money woes, assume that he's betrayed his own principles. Worse, Val announces that Brink is needed full-time for an upcoming championship match, which would pit him against his former cronies. When Brink rollerblades at the tournament, will it be under the banner of friendship or the flag of commercial sports? This wholesome-to-the-max family flick indulges in endless footage of athletic stunts. Fans of skating stunts can overlook the teen-ethics quandaries and focus on the freewheeling sports highlights. leave a comment --Robert Pardi
