Bring Your Smile Along

1955, Movie, NR, 83 mins

Timid schoolteacher Towers breaks away from her humble New England home and travels to New York in hopes of becoming a song lyricist. She latches onto tunesmith Brasselle and the two become partners. When their songs, as recorded by Laine, become popular hits, the working couple decide to become a romantic one, much to the dismay of Towers' hometown beau, Leslie. Although director Edwards had not yet perfected the wickedly funny style that made him one of the most popular comedy directors of the 1970s, this early effort is still entertaining. Towers and Brasselle are likable, if unexciting; Laine is fantastic as an enthusiastic singer. Songs include "Bring Your Smile Along" (Benny Davis, Carl Fischer), "If Spring Never Comes" (Bill Corey, Fischer), "Gandy Dancers Ball" (Paul Mason Howard, Paul Weston), "Don't Blame Me" (Dorothy Fields, Jimmy McHugh), "Side by Side" (Harry Woods), "When a Girl Is Beautiful," "Every Baby Needs a Da Da Daddy" (Allan Roberts, Lester Lee), and "Italian Mother Song" (Ned Washington, Lee). leave a comment
