American girl Baker, married to Japanese diplomat Shigeta, disregards the harsh comments of her family and friends and returns to Japan with her husband at the outbreak of WW II. Enduring numerous physical and social hardships during the war, an unexpected tragedy befalls the couple when the battles have ended.
