An extremely loose reworking of THE BRIDE OF FRANKENSTEIN (1935), THE BRIDE is actually two movies rolled into one. It's a poignant tale of friendship between the Frankenstein monster, Clancy Brown, and an adventurous dwarf, David Rappaport, a la OF MICE AND MEN. And it's an utterly worthless morality play about a mad scientist, Sting, obsessed with fashioning his new creation, Jennifer Beals, into his image of the perfect independent woman. THE BRIDE must be commended for its attempt to tell two parallel stories, but unfortunately the halves do not balance, resulting in a picture in which the lead characters (Sting and Beals) become secondary to the supporting ones (Brown and Rappaport). Whenever the scenes between Brown and Rappaport get into high gear, the audience is subjected to more of the unwanted Beals-Sting story. Had Sting and Beals been completely written out, THE BRIDE would be far more tolerable. Its saving grace is Rappaport (previously seen in TIME BANDITS [1981]), who brings in his relationship with Brown the film's only touch of humanity and warmth. Also recommended is the superb photography by Stephen H. Burum (who so skillfully shot RUMBLEFISH [1983]), which splendidly captures the gothic European atmosphere and brings to life the film's rich and detailed production design, much of it inspired by the original Universal "Frankenstein" series. leave a comment
