This misguided costume drama has pretty Goddard plotting the deaths of an aristocratic clan after she learns that the family's head, Lund, may have been responsible for her beloved husband's death. When her evil brother, Carey, plots to control all of Italy, including the land owned by
Lund, their diabolical plans become intertwined. A notorious box-office failure in its day, the film is a flawed but interesting tale of family intrigue and revenge. Leisen captures the eerie mood of the rich and twisted Borgias, but the treatment of his overwrought characters is unintentionally
humorous in more than a few scenes.
