New England school teacher, Allyson, an aspiring commercial artist, wins a job illustrating the new book by a popular children's author known as "Uncle Bump." Upon arrival in New York she learns that "Uncle Bump" is Johnson, a hard-drinking, child-hating young writer. Feeling that Johnson has betrayed children everywhere, Allyson threatens to expose him to the public. Seeing thousands of dollars flying out the window, Johnson's publisher friend, Cronyn, convinces Allyson that Johnson's attitude and habits are the result of his wife's death and current problems with their hostile son. Allyson swallows the fictitious story, but insists upon helping the troubled widower and meeting the little boy. Bribing tough orphan, Jenkins, to pose as Johnson's son, Cronyn is surprised to see the boy act as a catalyst in fueling the fires of romance between Johnson and Allyson. When Allyson discovers the true nature of the boy's relationship with the writer, she runs back home and prepares to marry long-time suitor, Derr. Jenkins, having grown attached to the couple, convinces Johnson to track Allyson down and propose marriage. The two arrive in New England on the day of Allyson's wedding and Jenkins delays the ceremony by unleashing an army of ants on the outdoor festivities. Johnson's plea to Allyson is successful and the couple return to New York, planning to adopt Jenkins as soon as they are married. A daffy comedy that manages to display some insight into the lonely world of children and lost adults. Allyson and Johnson do a remarkable job in blending character touches with slapstick action, although some may find the film's lack of sophistication a drawback. leave a comment
