How do you make a documentary about Brian Wilson without using any Beach Boys music? And why would you? The why is easy: Legal wrangles between Wilson and fellow ex-Beach Boy Mike Love rendered the classic recordings untouchable. The how is tougher. Director Don Was, a respected record producer, does his best to evoke the music, having Brian hum and sing his timelessly sweet melodies. But it's not quite the same. Still, the film can't help being interesting. Wilson's life has been a string of emotional disasters, and his fans are a Who's Who of classic and contemporary rock: John Cale, David Crosby, Thurston Moore, Tom Petty and Linda Ronstadt all show up to praise Wilson's deceptively accessible pop brilliance. But Wilson's demons get short shrift (where, for example, is the notorious therapist who reportedly dominated his life for many years?), and ultimately the film is too worshipful to please anyone but his most uncritical fans. leave a comment
