Probably the best of the many filmings of the popular novel and stage play. O'Keefe portrays Monty Brewster, the young, handsome, happy-go-lucky soldier returning from the war to his girlfriend Peggy Gray (Walker). Upon arriving home, he is stunned to find that he has inherited an estate worth $8,000,000, with one catch, however: he must spend $1,000,000 in the span of two months or he gets nothing. Brewster promptly embarks on a whirlwind of spending, racing around town in an effort to divest himself of the money by investing in a flop musical show, a bankrupt banker, the stock market, the racetrack, and a jewel-loving society woman. He soon finds out that spending money isn't as easy as it seems. BREWSTER'S MILLIONS is a broad farce and comes across as such, providing laughs throughout. While the opening is somewhat slow and deliberate, once the plot is established this modestly budgeted production rockets along with one climax topping another. The always reliable and appealing Walker and Anderson provide sturdy support, and O'Keefe gives one of his best performances. Previously filmed in 1921 with Fatty Arbuckle, and in a 1935 British production with Jack Buchanan and Lili Damita, the story was resurrected as THREE ON A SPREE with Jack Watling in 1961 and in an abysmal 1985 effort starring Richard Pryor and John Candy under the original title, with Walter Hill directing. In that version Brewster had to spend $30 million in 30 days to collect $300 million. Talk about inflation! leave a comment
