BREATHING ROOM

Director Jon Sherman's debut feature is a lighter-than-air romantic comedy whose desperate need to be liked is far more compelling than its own modest charms. David (Dan Futterman) and Kathy (Susan Floyd) have spent the better part of their two-year relationship breaking up and getting back together. Kathy is a workaholic illustrator married to her career. David, who teaches English as a second language, can say "I love you" in 15 different languages, but not the one Kathy understands: English. After a disastrous Thanksgiving dinner, they decide to undergo a trial separation. The rule is that they can't contact one another until Christmas, and their mission is to find out which is worse: being apart or being together. Despite some irritating camera gimmickry, the film is not without a certain appeal. But its relentlessly chirpy outlook and eagerness to please remind you of mimes, whose tenacity Kathy can't help but admire because they know everyone hates them, but they just keep plugging away. The problem is, they never know when to stop either. leave a comment
