Black humor dons its darkest robes in Terry Gilliam's masterpice that's simultaneously blindingly obtuse, excessively morose and dazzling in its visual inventiveness. The theme is latter-day Orwell, well beyond 1984. Punctilious statistician Sam Lowry (Jonathan Pryce) toils away in the Ministry of Information, and like millions of others, he lives and works in a subterranean world crowded with a huge snakelike ductwork that heats, cools and generally keeps the community going — when it works. A disaster, of sorts, is set off when a bug in the computer system causes everything to go haywire by altering the arrest record for a terrorist named Tuttle (Robert De Niro) to read Buttle. Doctor Who "Nice to meet you, Rose. Run for your life!" So concludes the first exchange between feisty Rose Tyler (Billie Piper) and her new acquaintance, the Doctor (Christopher Eccleston). Although Rose doesn't know what this cockney dude has to do with the sudden rash of killer mannequins roving around the basement of a Harrods-type department store, at least she could take solace in knowing that this man saved her from their murderous clutches.
