An animated tale of five household appliances--Radio (Lovitz), Lampy the Lamp (Stack), Blanky the Electric Blanket (Day), Kirby the Vacuum Cleaner (Ravencroft), and the toaster of the title (Oliver)--and their search for "Rob," the boy who was their master. The journey begins in a quiet summer cottage and takes them into the wilds of the inner city. After braving rainstorms, repairmen, and an electromagnet, the appliances find happiness in an urban junkyard. Despite the coyness of the storyline, this pleasant anthropomorphic allegory wins the viewer over with winning characterizations (most notably from former "Saturday Night Live" cast members Jon Lovitz and Phil Hartman) and cute animation. Based on a novella by fantasy author Thomas M. Disch, the film started out as a project purchased by Disney in 1982. Producer Thomas Wilhite (himself a former Disney employee) utilized the talents of former Disney animators, including director Jerry Rees, who supervised the computer animation scenes in TRON (1982). leave a comment
