A harsh account of a vigilante in the Old West who takes the law into his own hands, savagely extracts revenge, and lives to regret it. Peck arrives in town the night before the hanging of four outlaws whose trail he has been on for what he believes is the rape-murder of his wife. The four men escape the noose and the chase begins, with Peck catching them one by one and killing them as they scream out their innocence. Finally, the lone surviving fugitive convinces him that a trusted neighbor actually raped and killed his wife, and Peck realizes that his private lynch law has been both legally and morally wrong. His moment of truth is a powerful one and he gives it all the value it deserves, though much of his acting up to then had been lackluster. He returns to the town and the acclaim of its citizens and takes up with a former lady love, Collins, who tries to be convincing in a thankless role that apparently was written only to supply romantic interest. Outstanding in the film are color shots of gorges and precipitous mountains in remote areas of the Mexican states of Yucatan and Jalisco, where the film was made, and the interior of a church in a small Mexican town. leave a comment
