This package of four gay-themed short films has charming moments, but not enough of them to appeal to a wide audience. "Must Be the Music" follows two friends whose boys' night out at a Hollywood disco gets complicated when they're both attracted to the same guy. The characters and dialogue feel authentic, but the unfocused narrative plods along. In "Nunzio's Second Cousin," a gang of teens attacks a couple leaving a gay bar, only to find themselves picking on gun-wielding Sgt. Tony Randozza (Vincent D'Onofrio). To teach one young homophobe a lesson, Randozza forces him to join him for dinner with mom (Eileen Brennan). Brennan has wacky fun with her role, but Randozza comes off as an unsympathetic bully. A young, gay farmer discovers the secret of his missing father in the formally complex "Alkali, Iowa," which is surprisingly sensual and accomplished. The standout segment comes last: "Trevor," a co-winner of the 1994 Academy Award for Best Live Action Short, is a slick coming-of-age comedy about a pudgy adolescent (Brett Barsky) obsessed with suicide and Diana Ross. To see this poor dweeb trying to check out by gulping aspirin while lip-synching "Endless Love" is worth the price of admission. leave a comment
