A micro-budget horror film that's far more disturbing than most mainstream genre efforts, Ray Brady's feature debut caused enormous controversy when it was first released in the UK. Married Tevin (Tim Poole) goes to a bar looking for some action and hooks up with a flaky seeming Frenchwoman named Anne Marie (Margot Steinberg), who invites him back to her place to watch porn movies. But Tevin passes out — Anne Marie, it turns out, drugged his drink — and wakes up in the basement, nearly nude and strapped into a dentist's chair. Thinking Anne Marie is into some kind of S&M games, Tevin protests that he'd rather call the whole thing off. But he's in for a terrible surprise: Anne Marie isn't playing, she isn't going to let him go and she isn't even French — everything she said and did all evening was for the sole purpose of getting him where he is right now. She stalked him for days, knew he was married and lured him to her house — actually her meek friend Julia's (Danielle Sanderson) house — for the express purpose of torturing and killing him, as she has many other philandering men. Julia lurks in the background, recording Tevin's degredation and torment on video; her library of tapes makes it even clearer to Tevin what eventually lies in store for him. The plots delivers a couple of nasty twists, particularly regarding the relationship between the two woman, but overall it's an exercise in worst-possible-case-scenario expectations fulfilled. The film's low budget contributes to its grimy and oppressive atmosphere and it can't be accused of glamorizing violence, though there's a great deal — much of it psychological — on display. leave a comment
