Loosely connected story of Oakie and Cook, two rival Bowery showmen who eventually take their vaudeville-bred talents to 42nd Street. Although theft of ideas has separated them in the past, the two eventually collaborate on a show that turns out to be a tremendous success. When Cook breaks up the newly formed partnership to produce serious dramatic works for the lusty Montez, Oakie again turns sour on their relationship. After years of silence, the two reconcile during a revival of one of their classic productions. Essentially a vehicle to showcase the talents of Universal's singers and dancers of the 1940s, the film is undeniably up beat and entertaining, but lacks the clarity, focus, and spontaneity of a classic musical. Songs: "Just Because You Made Dem Goo Goo Eyes at Me" (Hughie Cannon, John Queen); "The Love Waltz," "There'll Always Be a Moon" (Everett Carter, Edward Ward); "Montevideo," "Coney Island Waltz" (Kim Gannon, Walter Kent); "My Song of Romance" (Don George, Dave Franklin); "Under the Bamboo Tree" (Bob Cole, J. Rosamond-Johnson); "Daisy Bell" (Harry Dacre); "Yippie-I-Addy-I-Ay" (Will Cobb, John H. Flynn); "Wait Till the Sun Shines Nellie" (Andrew B. Sterling, Harry von Tilzer); "He Took Her for a Sleigh Ride" (anon.). leave a comment
