A Fourth Bourne Flick? Forget About It?

Matt Damon in The Bourne Ultimatum courtesy Universal Pictures

This past Sunday, The Bourne Ultimatum took home three technical Oscars for editing, sound editing and sound mixing — every category in which it was nominated. In response, Universal has enlisted director Paul Greengrass and star Matt Damon in its effort to stage a fourth Bourne film. But wait, you ask? Didn't Jason Bourne (spoiler alert) recover his memory in Ultimatum, thus eliminating the series' central concept? Um, well, yeah. In fact, Damon said as much while promoting No. 3: "The reality is... the story of this guy’s search for his identity is over. He’s got all the answers. What would the fourth [film] be about?"[Dream sequence music][I raise my hand]"Yes, Mr. O'Connor?""Here's an idea, Mr. Damon. What if Jason tried to find and/or rescue other assassins who'd had their memories altered?"[Damon shrugs and turns to his publicist with a bug-eyed, get-me-out-of-here look]"OK, last question, folks…."[End dream sequence music]Well, I tried. Your turn: What's yo... read more

Has Blu-ray Finally Beat HD DVD for Good?

The Sopranos - Season 6 Part 2 [Blu-ray] courtesy HBO Home Video

HBO has joined the parade to Blu-ray after Warner Bros, its distributor, announced on Friday that they were dropping HD-DVD in May 2008. The Warner Bros announcement could be the event that ends the war between high-definition formats. HD-DVD has the exclusive support of Universal and Paramount/DreamWorks, while Blu-ray has Fox/MGM, Warner Bros, Disney, Sony and Lionsgate. Warner Bros, which holds about 20 percent of the market, was a huge win for the Blu-ray group, and leaves Blu-ray with roughly 75 percent of the HD market. The Warner Bros decision has influenced New Line, along with HBO, to make the switch to Blu-ray, but BBC Home Video is bucking the trend and "will evaluate the marketplace before committing to one format" (according to the studio); the studio has four high-definition releases planned for 2008, available on both formats, and has sold more copies of Planet Earth on HD-DVD. Recent notable Blu-ray releases include The Simpsons (Fox), Pirates of the Caribbean: At Wo... read more

Ratatouille Scurries to the Top, and Other DVD News

Ratatouille box art courtesy Walt Disney Video

Ratatouille topped last week's DVD sales chart, while I Now Pronounce You Chuck & Larry was the No. 1 rental pick. My sons checked out the Rat last week, but weren't wowed by it. "Too many damn frogs in this film," scoffed Jared, who with Jacob turned 5 on Tuesday.Elsewhere, DVD releases have been set for The Bourne Ultimatum (Dec. 11), Resident Evil: Extinction (Jan. 1), Barney & Friends: Celebrating Around the World (Jan. 29, 2008) and Perfect Strangers: The Complete First and Second Season (Feb. 28) — and yes, I shall be ridiculous, thank you. read more

Does Restless, Jerky Bourne-style Camera Work Make You Sick?

Matt Damon in The Bourne Supremacy courtesy Universal Pictures

Question Much has been made about Paul Greengrass handheld-camera work in The Bourne Ultimatum and the fact that both Supremacy and Ultimatum have been hits makes me certain that filmmakers will keep doing it But I cant be the only person who gets nauseous watching these films The incessant movement is difficult to watch Rarely does the camera stop long enough for the viewer to process a shot even the quietest moments cant be still Matt Damon is great and Id like to say I enjoyed the movies but when I have to go home and take something for headache and nausea that cant be good Am I alone in this DarylFlickChick Youre far from alone some critics and a lot of moviegoers have complained about the restless shaky handheld-camera work and superfast editing in The Bourne Ultimatum 2007 in particular and movies in general Filmmakers generally use restless jittery camera work to establish a you-are-there atmosphere sometimes its meant to look as thoug read more
