Does Restless, Jerky Bourne-style Camera Work Make You Sick?

Matt Damon in The Bourne Supremacy courtesy Universal Pictures

Question Much has been made about Paul Greengrass handheld-camera work in The Bourne Ultimatum and the fact that both Supremacy and Ultimatum have been hits makes me certain that filmmakers will keep doing it But I cant be the only person who gets nauseous watching these films The incessant movement is difficult to watch Rarely does the camera stop long enough for the viewer to process a shot even the quietest moments cant be still Matt Damon is great and Id like to say I enjoyed the movies but when I have to go home and take something for headache and nausea that cant be good Am I alone in this DarylFlickChick Youre far from alone some critics and a lot of moviegoers have complained about the restless shaky handheld-camera work and superfast editing in The Bourne Ultimatum 2007 in particular and movies in general Filmmakers generally use restless jittery camera work to establish a you-are-there atmosphere sometimes its meant to look as thoug read more

Tonight at 10 pm/ET, NBC lays the foundation for a major Heist with a serialized drama — directed by Doug Liman (The Bourne Supremacy, Mr. & Mrs. Smith) and penned by Mark and Robb Cullen (FX's Lucky) — about the simultaneous robbery of three Beverly Hills jewelry stores. In a Saab TV commercial, the ...

Question: In a Saab TV commercial, the background music sounds similar to the music in the chase scene from either The Bourne Identity or The Bourne Supremacy. Can you find out the title of that music and if it's available for purchase? It's very catchy. Thanks.

Answer: That's Paul Oakenfold's "Ready Steady Go," and it is indeed the same song featured in The Bourne Identity, as well as Collateral, some Fox NASCAR promos and a few other places I can't think of at the moment. Mr. Oakenfold has very considerately made the song available for purchase. You'll find it on his 2002 release Bunkka (Maverick).

Meet Matt Damon's Dead Ex

Poor Franka Potente. In 2002's The Bourne Identity, the 30-year-old German actress created the role of Marie, the streetwise Berliner who fell for Matt Damon's amnesiac assassin, Jason Bourne. This summer's hit sequel, The Bourne Supremacy, treated moviegoers to a nasty surprise: Early on in the movie, Marie gets whacked! Now, that ain't right.

Potente, who first popped up on America's radar in 1999's Run Lola Run, wasn't thrilled with Marie's exit either. She thought Bourne's brave girlfriend deserved better than to passively jump in his jeep, only to be shot in the back of her noggin by a contract killer — sheesh, talk about riding shotgun! — and end up at the bottom of a river.

"I had different ideas of the way that we — how shall I phrase this? — lose sight of her," Potente grins. "But the director [Paul Greengrass] is really good and he fought me on it. In the end, I guess the b read more

Matt Damon Re-Bourne

Nobody in Hollywood would argue that Matt Damon is an A-lister — except maybe the humble Matt himself. "It's weird to talk about my career in terms of success," says the Bourne Supremacy star. "Really recently, before The Bourne Identity came out, I hadn't been offered a movie in a year. The Legend of Bagger Vance and All The Pretty Horse had come out and bombed.

"The word on The Bourne Identity was that it was also gonna tank, because we had pushed back the release date a couple of times," he continues. "So people went, 'Oh, that's a sign things aren't going well.' In fact, Universal gave us more money to go back, reshoot and make the movie a lot better. But the outward signals in the industry were that this was gonna suck!

"Nobody gave me any job offers for quite some time, so I went and did a play in London," Damon recalls. "We closed on a Saturday night and Bourne Identity had opened that [ read more
