Born To Sing: Review

Thin musical about a composer, despondent over the theft of his latest musical comedy effort, who is saved from suicide by three youngsters. Along with the composer's daughter, they manage to stage the production, and, with the help of a forceful cabbie, steal the audience from a rival composer. Weak, stupid story is just an excuse to stage the number "Ballad for Americans" (Earl Robinson, John Latouche), the rights to which MGM bought with the intent of constructing a picture around it. Directed by Berkeley, the number looks completely overblown and out of place here. Other songs include "I Hate The Conga" (Earl Brent), "Alone," "You Are My Lucky Star" (Arthur Freed, Nacio Herb Brown) and "I Love Ya" (Brent, Lenny Hayton). leave a comment
