1930, Movie, NR, 73 mins

Suave gangster Lowe is apprehended for a robbery, but he is offered a choice of either going to prison or to war to fight for his country. He opts for the military and becomes a hero. Upon returning, Lowe resumes his criminal career which bogs down when he falls in love with Owen, a high society lady. Hymer, in an act of reprisal against Lowe in their bootleg wars, kidnaps Owen's little girl, but Lowe goes to the rescue, retrieving the girl and killing Hymer. Although Lowe is not too convincing as an Italian gangster from NYC's "Little Italy," Ford's superb depiction of underworld settings and his fluid camera add greatly to this early gangster vehicle. This profile is based on the popular novel Louis Beretti, which shows underworld types in the fashion of the 1920s, a bit more civilized and conscious of the law than their brutal successors of the 1930s.
