BORDERLINE predates the Jack Nicholson-Harvey Keitel film on the same subject, THE BORDER, by two years, but neither film really delivers. (The original film on this theme, BORDER INCIDENT, starring Ricardo Montalban and George Murphy, was better than both in execution and sincerity.) Charles Bronson plays Jeb Maynard, a border patrolman battling a flesh smuggler (Ed Harris) who runs Latinos across the US-Mexico frontier for a large profit. Lots of night footage will make this a tough film to watch on TV in a semi-lit room, but it plays well enough in a theater. Bronson is his customary taciturn, crinkly-eyed, and heroic character; Karmin Murcelo, the only female featured, stands out as the illegal immigrant who takes Jeb to the villain. A good programmer, but nothing special. leave a comment
