McCrea plays a Confederate officer who leads a raid that nets $2 million in gold bullion. Taking the loot to Mexico, McCrea tries to buy arms and ammunition for the beleaguered Southern armies. But word of his fortune gets around and McCrea spends most of his time protecting it from a variety of unsavory types, including a slimy Mexican general and his even slimier German advisor.
