Moore wanders into a gas station somewhere in rural California, gets into a fight with a pair of goons, is arrested, and is offered a proposition: pick peppers for $25 a day or rot in jail. He picks picking peppers. Soon he is confronted by the crooked local union boss, who demands a $500 initial fee and $25 a week to let Ryan work. A shortage of drivers removes Ryan from the fields and puts him behind the wheel, where he meets Fluegel, the mistress of big boss Vernon. She invites Ryan up to her cabin and, after some hot-tub romping, outlines Vernon's operation, including his crooked union racket, and offers Ryan a chance to help her rob Vernon blind. Surprisingly suspenseful and professional for a film that never received a US theatrical release, BORDER HEAT has plenty going for it--most notably Fluegel (best known for her role in the short-lived but excellent TV series "Crime Story"), who gives a fine portrayal of a manipulative, amoral hustler looking to make a big score. As for the other performances, Moore is a believable hero, and Vernon and his supporting rednecks are also good. The script, by Kleven, who also produced and directed admirably, is full of memorable lines; unfortunately, most of them are unprintable. leave a comment
