Moore wanders into a gas station somewhere in rural California, gets into a fight with a pair of goons, is arrested, and is offered a proposition: pick peppers for $25 a day or rot in jail. He picks picking peppers. Soon he is confronted by the crooked local union boss, who demands a $500 initial fee and $25 a week to let Ryan work.
