This is the bizarre and wholly self-conscious sequel to THE BOOGEY MAN (see above) wherein director Ulli Lommel attacks the Hollywood system by casting himself as a hack director constantly at odds with his producer. Beginning six months after the first picture ended, the film follows Lacey (again played by Suzanna Love) as she moves from Maryland to Los Angeles to begin a new life. After falling in with the Hollywood crowd, she is encouraged to recall the events of the first film (thus saving money by using up nearly a half an hour of running time with footage from THE BOOGEY MAN). Film director Mickey (Lommel) and his friends want to make a movie about the terrifying experience, but when a shard of mirror from the first film turns up, Lacey's new friends are slaughtered one by one in a variety of deliberately absurd and amusing ways. Obviously bitter and cynical in his view of the Hollywood scene, director Lommel fulfills the minimum requirements of the inevitable sequel by delivering virtually the same chills and gore from the first film, while at the same time mocking the entire process (the extensive use of footage from the original) and bitching about it publicly in the guise of an angry director. Although at times a bit frustrating to watch--because of the already familiar flashback footage--BOOGEYMAN II is a fascinating display of utter contempt for the industry that produced it. leave a comment
