A fascinating Filipino film by one of that country's best directors. Aunor is a schoolgirl from a middle-class family who falls in love with Salvador, a seedy gigolo and part-time movie extra. She moves into his shanty in a Manila slum and takes care of him, performing menial tasks and patiently standing by while he carries on with other women. When he plans to leave her to go to America, though, she gets violent. Although Brocka is perhaps the best-known Filipino filmmaker (in Europe, at least), his works were frequently banned under the Ferdinand Marcos regime.
