George Raft didn't want to die in a film, but in BOLERO he dies of a heart attack after dancing the Bolero on an enormous drum with Lombard, and his dying words are "I'm too good for this joint." That's the way Raft felt about movie studios, and his battles and refusals are legendary. BOLERO is the story of a megalomaniacal dancer who ascends from low-brow cafes to become the owner of a posh Parisian club. Raft knows that it's best to lay off one's dance partners, so he keeps them at arm's length, until he meets up with Lombard and falls head-over-patent-leather-heels for her. But she loves Milland, and the feeling is mutual. One night Raft reveals that he is going to enlist in the service (the start of the war had been announced that afternoon) but he later confesses that his announcement was just a ploy to get more business for the club. Enraged, Lombard leaves to marry Milland. After several dissolves the war ends with Raft returning with a weak heart. Nonetheless, he is determined that he will dance again and reopens the club, hiring Sally Rand to be his new partner. She manages to do her famous fan dance, but when it's time to dance the Bolero, she's wacked on hooch. Seated in the audience with Milland is Lombard, who volunteers to fill in for the drunken Rand. The dance is a huge success but before they can do the encore, Raft dies. Both Lombard and Raft enjoyed making this movie and a sequel followed soon after, RUMBA (1935). Although both were excellent dancers, Paramount used doubles in some long shots. Worth watching. leave a comment
