BOGUS
starstarstarstar
First, the good news: DROP DEAD FRED is still the ghastliest invisible friend movie ever made. But only just. Albert (Haley Joel Osment) is an orphaned youngster whose mom (Nancy Travis) was a showgirl with the magic act of pretentious French illusionist Monsieur Antoine (Denis Mercier). Albert's Vegas upbringing makes him less than thrilled with grimy Newark, NJ, where he's sent to live with his workaholic godmother Harriet (Whoopi Goldberg). She, in turn, is not exactly overjoyed at the prospect of playing mom to a precocious white boy whose imaginary friend is a hulking Frenchman named Bogus (Gerard Depardieu). This bit of leaden fluff is desperately well-intentioned, but between the hulking Depardieu and the incessant whining of little Haley Joel -- the sort of insufferable moppet whom movie directors seem to find cute -- it's all strenuously unmagical. leave a comment
