Though less than spine-tingling, this gore picture dresses up its ghoulishness with some fanciful supernatural trappings. Unfortunately, the low budget and low-quality actors undermine the chills. In 802 A.D., Berserker pagans besieged Copenhagen’s Valborg Castle while the lord was absent. This evil cult used the blood of Valborg’s female servants in its rituals. When the lord returned, he purged his property by slaughtering the invaders and tossing his tarnished handmaidens into the bog. In the modern day, unorthodox Professor Feneman (Jeffrey Howard) and his sister Kelly (Lara Theodos) hope to confirm the historical accuracy of this account of a centuries-old massacre and hire American anthropology students to scour the bog for naturally mummified corpses. The collegiate crew is composed of Suzi Bethe (Courtney Henggeler), Nick Warren (Michael Mosley), Steve Dyson (Joshua Park), Ron Teller (Jesse Steccato) and Diana Oppenheimer (Leia Thompson). The students quickly discover that the dessicated remains can reanimate themselves! A female swamp creature and a male Viking are transported to Feneman's lab, but other bog bodies rise up, kidnap Susan and strangle Ron. Feneman dispatches the resurrected Viking with sulfur dioxide and gets a crash course in Berserker history from the friendlier female, once a loyal Valborg retainer, while the the remaining students rescue an apparently terrified camper, Tara (Debbie Rochon), in the swamp. Unfortunately, Tara proves to be a direct descendant of the Berserker priestess who spearheaded the mayhem in 802; she tricks her rescuers and plots to revive her ancestor and the rest of the living dead. It's up to the young scholars to stop Tara from inviting legions of the buried bog people to walk among us. This swampy spook show swipes liberally from the films of George Romero and Sam Raimi without scaring up many chills of its own. But it deserves some credit for adding a new dimension to the zombie sub-genre. leave a comment --Robert Pardi
