Bob, Son Of Battle

Edmund Gwenn, who earlier in the year scored big in his Oscar-winning role as Kris Kringle in MIRACLE ON 34TH STREET, went in the opposite direction here, playing a hard-drinking, mean-spirited Scottish shepherd. The main target of his wrath is his son, played by McCallister. For two years, Gwenn's dog, Red Wool, has won the coveted award as the best sheep dog in the valley, but the dog is as nasty in temperament as its owner. Bob, Son of Battle, owned by the kindly Owen, is Red Wool's chief rival for the trophy, and when McCallister decides to help train Owen's dog, it sets up a confrontation between father and son.
