George Sanders was everybody's favorite swine until he took his own life in 1972 after leaving a note that said he'd done everything else and was bored. It was a mistake, George; you were good in everything you ever did, including this turkey retelling of the Bluebeard story, which has been done on several other occasions and will, no doubt, continue to be retold as long as people are fascinated by mass murder. (BLUEBEARD starring John Carradine, 1944; BLUEBEARD with Richard Burton, 1972; and, of course, Charlie Chaplin's version, MONSIEUR VERDOUX). Not even Sanders' suavity and Calvet's curves can make this version anything more than a potboiler. There's an actor named Ian Fleming who plays an attorney, and many people confuse him with the author of the James Bond films who was also an actor in his early years. This is a different Ian, however. By the time this movie was made, Fleming the author was rolling in money and too above it all to work as an actor again. leave a comment
