A dumbed-down variation on the BEVERLY HILLS COP formula, designed to showcase the manic talents of Martin Lawrence. That said, it really could be a whole lot worse. L.A.-based jewel thief Miles Logan (Lawrence) and his three-man crew execute a flawless, high-tech heist that nets an enormous diamond. Then everything goes straight to hell. Stone-cold bad guy Deacon (Peter Greene) turns on the others; one of the gang is killed, driver Tulley (David Chapelle) flees and Miles gets picked up by the cops — but not before he's stashed the gem in an air conditioning duct of an unfinished building. Two years later, Miles gets out of jail and goes to retrieve the sparkler. But guess what? The building is finished and it's a police station. So to get inside Miles steals a cop's ID card, gets himself some false paperwork, watches a few episodes of Cops to get the moves right and pretends to be a last-minute transfer from another precinct. It'll only be for a few hours, he thinks. The ruse works perfectly; he's teamed up with a white-bread rookie detective (Luke Wilson) and given the run of the joint. The irony is that Miles keeps getting maneuvered into doing actual police work, and keeps succeeding at it (after all, he's got a bad guy's insight into the situation), which leaves him little time to poke around the ducts for his loot. Clearly Martin Lawrence's schtick is the main event, and that's both the good and the bad news. Sometimes he's genuinely very funny, and sometimes he isn't; regardless, the already thin plot stops dead at regular intervals so he can make faces, contort himself and cuss colorfully. It's a dumb movie, but it's good for a few profoundly undemanding laughs. leave a comment --Maitland McDonagh
