1957, Movie, NR, 86 mins

starstarstarstar
The further adventures of those madcap schoolgirls Searle loved to draw. Sim, in drag as Miss Fritton, the schoolmistress, is in jail, and the army and police have been called out to keep order at St. Trinian's school. The girls hate being stuck there, so they enter a contest and, through cheating, win a trip to Europe. Next, a series of misadventures: diamonds are stolen by the father of one of the girls; the criminal dresses up as a woman and poses as the new headmistress in order to flee Europe; the jewels somehow get into a water polo ball and a mad match is played; and on and on and on, one slapstick joke after another in the 86 minutes with nary a chance to catch one's breath. Grenfell is delicious, but Terry-Thomas is most memorable as the crooked owner of the bus company that takes the girls on their trip. All of the St. Trinian's films are recalled with fond memory. leave a comment
