Director Randal Kleiser (BIG TOP PEE-WEE; GETTING IT RIGHT) collaborated with Douglas Day Stewart (AN OFFICER AND A GENTLEMAN) on this beautiful-to-see but excruciating-to-hear remake of the 1949 picture of the same name. Although the 1980 version was rated R, it's hardly more exciting than the original--despite the fact that the film features as much nudity as the filmmakers could get away with in a story starring an actress as young as Brooke Shields was then. Filled with holes big enough to drive a train through and moments of suspense that prove false alarms, the story concerns two young people (Shields and Chris Atkins) who are shipwrecked on an island, develop a sexual relationship as they mature, and so forth. At a little over 100 minutes, the film feels as if huge chunks of it were edited out for pace; however, the wrong chunks have been cut. Leo McKern, as always, is good as the hard-drinking Paddy, but 14-year-old Shields is still learning her craft at the viewer's expense, while Atkins looks as if he would be more at home on a surfboard. Almendros's photography was nominated for an Oscar. leave a comment
