A taut film noir that still plays like house on fire. A super tough Alan Ladd returns home from the war to find that wife Doris Dowling has become a tramp. When she's murdered, he quickly becomes suspect number one. This is the only film script Raymond Chandler wrote directly for the screen, and it simmers with his hard-boiled, grim wit.
