Monogram Pictures tried to duplicate its success with BLUE GRASS OF KENTUCKY in this film but fell short by several furlongs. For BLUE BLOOD, W. Scott Darling (who also wrote the earlier film's fine screenplay) adapted a story by Peter B. Kyne about the rescue of a horse from a dog food factory. Arthur Shields (who looks and sounds like Barry Fitzgerald, with good reason--he was his brother) plays an old trainer who does his best to get the reprieved horse to overcome a troubling phobia and back on the winning track. The characters played by Bill Williams and Jane Nigh, the stars of BLUE GRASS OF KENTUCKY, don't know each other at the start of BLUE BLOOD, and this might have been a more interesting film if their relationship from the earlier film had been carried over into this one. leave a comment
