Brutal gangster film starring Shelley Winters as the infamous Ma Barker who, with her brood of demented sons, terrorized the Ozark mountain area during the Depression. Winters lovely family includes Stroud, who on occasion sleeps with Ma, De Niro, a hopeless drug addict, Kimbrough, the only reserved one in the bunch, and Walden, a homosexual whose lover Dern also joins the gang. As they set out a spree which includes robbery, rape, and murder, they add Stroud's prostitute girl friend Varsi to the group. Hingle plays a millionaire who is kidnaped and held for ransom by the Barkers. Director Corman throws just about every perversion and neuroses imaginable on to the screen and he is aided and abetted in his chaotic endeavor by a relentlessly wild performance from Winters. It's fun for awhile, but soon the sheer lunacy of it all wears thin as Corman keeps trying to top himself. Filmed on location in the Ozarks. leave a comment
