Fast-moving Damon Runyon story about a bookie (Brady) who leaves New York to avoid an investigating committee. He tries to lose himself deep in the marshes of Georgia and there he meets Gaynor, an adorable yokelette who is determined to make it big on the Great White Way. The little lady has some talent, and after saving his life, she convinces Brady (brother of Lawrence Tierney) to take her back north, where she can find fame and fortune. With some scene-stealing bloodhounds in tow, she succeeds in the Big Apple and reforms Brady. He blabs before the committee and is sent away for a year. Look for Buchinsky (later known as Charles Bronson) as Pittsburgh Philo (a takeoff on Pittsburgh Phil, who was really a killer in the 1930s and part of Murder, Inc.). Good choreography by Bob Sydney, who created some hip-slinging numbers for this film and who stayed with Gaynor well into the 1970s as dance director of her TV specials. leave a comment
