This tough flag-waver set in the late 1920s focuses on worldly newspaper editor Nick Condon (James Cagney) of the American-owned Tokyo Chronicle, who prints a controversial story by reporter Ollie Miller (Wallace Ford) and his wife, Edith (Rosemary DeCamp). Japanese authorities demand a retraction, but Condon refuses, learning later that the Millers have been murdered while trying to get out of the country with the "Tanaka Plan," a secret document that outlines Japan's plan to invade Manchuria. When Cagney tries to investigate, he is accused of murdering the couple during a drunken brawl and jailed. Coming to his assistance is the beautiful Iris Hilliard (Sylvia Sidney), an Anglo-Chinese double agent trying to settle an old score with the Japanese. There's a lot of action here as Cagney demonstrates his proficiency in jujitsu and wins a slam-bang fight with a brutish Japanese secret service captain (Jack Halloran). The sets, atmospheric lighting, and quick-paced direction by Frank Lloyd are commendable and enhance Cagney's electrifying performance. Most fascinating, though, are the details relating to the "Tanaka Plan," a real document stolen in 1927 and exposed in the international press. leave a comment
