Filmed in 1986 and first released (regionally) in 1989, BLOOD RED stars Dennis Hopper as Berrigan, a 19th-century California railroad tycoon used to getting his own way--even if that means laying tracks right through the property of Italian immigrant grape-growers. When Sebastian Collogero (Giancarlo Giannini) inspires the other vintners to hold on to their land, Berrigan hires thugs (led by Burt Young) to terrorize them into submission. Meanwhile, Sebastian's son, Marco (Eric Roberts), who has been busy sowing his wild oats with an attractive widow (Susan Anspach), falls for his neighbor's convent-bred daughter (Lara Harris) and assumes his rightful place by his combative father's side. Notwithstanding its delayed release, there is nothing incompetent about BLOOD RED; it's simply that little directorial imagination has been brought to bear on filming its representation of Americana. Director Peter Masterson (THE TRIP TO BOUNTIFUL) does such a pedestrian job of framing the action that we're left with a history lesson, attractively photographed but dry. leave a comment
