Funded by the Vicomte de Noailles, who was also behind Luis Bunuel's L'AGE D'OR, this is Jean Cocteau's first step into filmmaking, just one of the many media in which the great poet worked. Divided into four episodes--"The Wounded Hand, or the Scars of the Poet," "Do Walls Have Ears?" "The Battle of the Snowballs," and "The Profanation of the Host"--THE BLOOD OF THE POET is a journey in which Cocteau attempts to "picture the poet's inner self." Taking great liberties with the notion of narrative film, it is a collection of all that is Cocteau--his dreams, his mirrors, his stars, his opium addiction, his deceptive images and sets, his mythology, and his obsession with dying. What is so remarkable about THE BLOOD OF THE POET is that Cocteau has created a lasting piece of art, a haunting poem, as exciting today as it was in 1930. leave a comment
