There have been a number of attempts to recreate the ambience of the professional-wrestling arena on screen, and BLOOD AND GUTS may come the closest to succeeding. Directed by Lynch, this fast-moving film follows a down-and-out wrestling troupe as it travels the tank-town circuit. Smith, who was so good battling Clint Eastwood in ANY WHICH WAY YOU CAN (1980), plays a sympathetic, aging wrestler who becomes enmeshed in a love triangle involving a younger wrestler (Clark, whom Yale football fans may remember) and the radiant Lanctot. Beckman, who can frequently be seen overacting on TV, gobbles up the Canadian scenery as the wrestling troupe's boss. BLOOD AND GUTS just misses being the definitive wrestling picture because of some bumps in the script and Beckman's histrionics; otherwise, it's a worthwhile look at the spectacle of professional wrestling. leave a comment
