Al Adamson strikes again, this time presiding over the sad, sad end of the long, distinguished careers of J. Carrol Naish and Lon Chaney, Jr. Naish, who came out of retirement to embarrass himself here, plays a wheelchair-bound Dr. Frankenstein, who is posing as the curator of a horror museum while working on a rejuvenating blood serum. Chaney, who spent his entire career trying to break free of typecasting after his magnificent portrayal of the imbecilic Lenny in OF MICE AND MEN (1939), ends his acting days with a pathetic parody of Lenny as Groton, Frankenstein's "mad zombie" assistant, who is sent out to kill young girls for further experiments. It just so happens that a very disco-looking Count Dracula (played by an actor using the unlikely pseudonym of Zandor Vorkov) is in the area and has dug up the remains of the original Frankenstein monster (John Bloom). Teaming up with the elderly doctor, Dracula intends to use the blood serum to allow him to prowl during the day and help bring the monster back to life. Adamson's busty wife, Regina Carrol--who appeared in virtually all her husband's films--is also on hand to jiggle about, while Famous Monsters of Filmland editor Forrest J. Ackerman shows up long enough to get killed. To avoid infringing on Universal Studios' copyright of makeup designs for DRACULA and FRANKENSTEIN, Adamson and his crew came up with two silly-looking monsters: Dracula sports an afro and goatee, while the monster looks like a guy with a terminal case of hives who was hit upside the head with a brick. leave a comment
