A rural-noir pot-boiler in the tradition of crime films like JACKSON COUNTY JAIL (1976) and MACON COUNTY LINE (1974), in which backwoods justice exists at the discretion of the local sheriff. Although they've left the hub-bub of Seattle looking for refuge in small-town America, big-city detective Daniel Pruitt, (Johnathon Schaech) and his wife, Jess (Elizabeth Lackey), don't find it. Pruitt's 1966 Mustang attracts the attention of drugged-out Bobby McKenna (Paul Glover), the son of Sheriff Morgan McKenna (James Caan). Bobby has been doing business with the town's drug dealer, Jonah Ganz (David Field), and he and his low-life pals Redmond Sawyer (John Atkinson) and Wayne Scuggs (Ted Clarke), are looking for ways to score quick cash. Pruitt and Jess have the misfortune to be on a camping trip in the vicinity, and Pruitt foolishly leaves her alone in the woods. Jess is raped and goes into shock, but later identifies Bobby as her assailant after he smashes his truck into their vintage car. Outraged, Pruitt pistol whips Bobby and locks him in his truck. When someone bumps Bobby off, Pruitt realizes that he's the likeliest suspect and, well aware of small-town distrust of outsiders, destroys evidence linking him to the homicide scene. Sheriff McKenna cagily takes Pruitt into his confidence, seeking advice about solving the crime. But McKenna is a father first and a lawman second; what hereally wants is vengeance. Meanwhile, someone wounds Deputy Dave Forrest (Andrew Binns), who has publicly spoken out against Pruitt. McKenna and Pruitt eventually realize that Jess's rapist and Bobby's murderer are two different people. Without blinking, McKenna pursues instant justice against the criminals, but the fall-out from that may be the worst thing that ever happened to the Pruitts. If Mark Lawrence Miller and Preston A. Whitmore's screenplay had focused more subtly on the wary relationship that evolves between the urban and rural lawmen, this would be a far more compelling film. As it stands, there are exciting sequences but the film overall is undermined by a protagonist whose decision to tamper with clues strains credulity. leave a comment --Robert Pardi
