This version of Sheridan Le Fanu's
Carmilla (which had been the basis for the 1932 version of VAMPYR) abounds in atmosphere and recounts the story of Carmilla (Vadim), a typical woman in modern day Rome, obsessed with her vampire ancestor, Mircalla. While celebrating her aristocratic
cousin's engagement at a masked ball, Carmilla cannot resist reverting to type by killing a servant girl and biting her cousin's fiancee. The version dubbed for American audiences omits all references to lesbianism, pretty much destroying the story. (Remade as THE VAMPIRE LOVERS.)
